Dick White and the Mountain Boomer
Dick White and Guspar Romero were building fence on Dick’s place [at Campana],
digging postholes. When Dick moved a rock, a big lizard – a mountain boomer, which
has a reputation for biting hard and holding on ‘until it thunders’ — jumped on his boot
and ran up the inside of his leg, inside his pants. When it had gone as far as it could go, it
turned around and ran back down his leg — into his boot. When it had gone as far as it
could go, it turned around and ran up his leg again.
Dick was hollering for Guspar to come pull off his boot. By the time Guspar got there
and pulled off the tight boot, the lizard had made several round trips.
Guspar’s report:
“Mr. White, he plumb green.”
